Value-adding processing of waste as a technology for the future. With a project in Vienna, SMS group is taking the next step in its New Horizon initiative

On September 17, 2020, SMS group received the approval for the construction of a pilot plant in Vienna, Austria. The new plant is to demonstrate the feasibility of eco-friendly and carbon-neutral production of fuels from waste. SMS group’s project partner BEST – Bioenergy and Sustainable Technologies is going to implement an unprecedented process chain for the generation and use of hydrogen-rich syn-gas at industrial scale in the Vienna district of Simmering at the location of a special-waste incineration plant operated by the local utility company Wien Energie. The core element of the facility, a syn-gas generator built by SMS group is scheduled to become operational in mid-2021.

SMS digital, the digital subsidiary of SMS group, has been awarded with the implementation of a new highly automated slab yard management system for JSW Steel Ltd. located in Dolvi, India. The X-Pact® MES 4.0 Warehouse Management System will support the efficient use of limited-sized slab yard space and is an essential factor for a high utilization of the hot mill capacity.

Primetals Technologies receives final acceptance for revamping No.2 Continuous Pickling Line for Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel, Ltd.

Improves pickling of high tensile strength strips for automobiles
Saves energy and reduces acid solution consumption with iBox and acid concentration control

In June 2020, Primetals Technologies received the final acceptance certificate (FAC) for revamping No. 2 continuous pickling line for Kakogawa Works of Kobe Steel, Ltd. An iBox replaced the existing pickling tank, and it demonstrated the improved productivity of high-strength strips for automobiles, saving of energy, and reduction of acid solution consumption in operation after the revamping work completion.

Modernization boosts Coiled Rod output at Alfa Acciai

Danieli completed a successful modernization of the spooler line for Bar Mill #2 at Alfa Acciai, Brescia, Italy, implementing for the first-time simultaneous coiling of small-diameter rods by two coilers as part of a single line. The upgrade allows the steelmaker to increase its production of coiled rod products, in line with current market demand, and also results in a significant improvement to the characteristics and mechanical properties of the finished coils.

Steel for green energy: Hornsea One offshore wind farm builds on heavy plate from Dillinger

With a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts, the British offshore wind farm Hornsea One is one of the largest in the world and is seen as a trailblazer in the energy transition. The wind farm builds on steel from Dillingen: Dillinger supplied approx. 99,000 tons of heavy plate for the monopile foundation structures.

HybrEx® extrusion technology on the road to success in Japan

UACJ awards FAC for HybrEx®40 extrusion press line supplied by SMS group

UACJ Extrusion Nagoya Corporation, Japan, has awarded SMS group the final acceptance certificate (FAC) for the supplied new HybrEx®40 extrusion press line. With this investment, UACJ is expanding the extrusion capacity at its plant in Nagoya, Japan.

EAF Modernization at Seah Besteel, Korea

SeAH Besteel, the largest special steel producer in Korea, contracted Danieli to increase the process efficiency for EAF #3 at the Gunsan meltshop. The steel quality targets indicated for this 100-ton electric furnace require the use of low-residual scrap, which results in very dense charge mixes. The need to avoid over-oxidation—thus to maximize process repeatability and steel quality—together with the target of maximizing arc stability and active power in the presence of high-density scrap, were the major reasons for selecting the Q-MELT technological package.

DOWNCOILER MANDREL REVAMPING FOR GJ STEEL HOT-STRIP MILL

GJ Steel Public Company Limited contracted Danieli Service to revamp a downcoiler mandrel for its hot-strip mill in Rayong, Thailand.

The technical expertise of Danieli Service Team and the proximity to the customer enabled a quick upgrade of the equipment originally designed by another manufacturer.

Hasçelik banks on SMS group’s experience and orders one of the most powerful combined drawing lines for bright bar

Hasçelik San. Ve Tic. A.Ş, based in Gebze, Kocaeli, and operator of the highest production capacities for bright steel bars in Turkey, has placed an order with SMS group (www.sms-group.com) for a state-ofthe-art combined drawing line (CDL) KZ-RP IIIB/25 to expand both its production range and capacity. The new drawing line, based on the proven Schumag design (bright-steel processing machine designer Schumag merged into SMS group in 2008), comes with optimized features and new developments along the entire process chain.
