SSAB and Norsk Stål AS start partnership in fossil-free steel for the Nordic Market

SSAB has entered into an agreement with the Norwegian steel distributor Norsk Stål AS, as the first external distributor to deliver fossil-free steel on the Norwegian Market, starting 2026.

“I am happy to welcome Norsk Stål as a fossil-free steel partner. Together, we are contributing to reduced carbon dioxide emissions by introducing fossil-free steel to the Norwegian market,” says Matts Nilsson, Head of Sales Sweden & Norway at SSAB. “Together, we are building fossil-free value chains all the way to the end customer.”

Mexican steel producer Talleres y Aceros S.A. de C.V. (TYASA) has signed a contract with Primetals Technologies for a new twin ladle furnace. The new equipment will be implemented at TYASA’s Ixtaczoquitlán site, located in the south-eastern part of Mexico.

Chinese magnesium-alloy strip producer Youli is operating its new strip-casting line in Shandong, China.
The new plant will produce hot-rolled strip from 4 to 7 mm thick (mechanical capacity up to 10 mm) and in widths from 900 to 1425 mm.

ASAŞ Alüminyum, one of Turkey's largest aluminum manufacturers, is investing in extrusion technology from SMS group to produce profile sizes that currently cannot be produced anywhere in Europe. ASAŞ has been relying on SMS group's expertise for many years and has ordered two new aluminum extrusion lines. The plants to be supplied comprise a 150 MN extrusion and tube line, as well as a 45 MN HybrEx® line.

SMS group company Paul Wurth has been selected to supply the world's first commercial 100 percent hydrogen Direct Reduction plant with its consortium partner Midrex to the Swedish company H2 Green Steel. The new plant, located in Boden in northern Sweden, will be the first worldwide to produce green steel at scale by replacing coal with green hydrogen.

New research within the HYBRIT project, driven by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, shows superior results on the properties and quality of the hydrogen direct reduced sponge iron (H-DRI) made using HYBRIT technology. Test results prove that the direct reduction of iron ore using hydrogen offers a superior product that is easy to handle, transport and store. It also virtually eliminates CO2 emissions in the reduction process.

Bashundhara Multisteel Industries Limited, the Steel Division of Bashundhara Group, one of the largest business conglomerates in Bangladesh, signed a contract with SMS group to install an integrated facility to produce more than two million tons of hot rolled coils annually with the goal of filling the gap in demand for flat products in Bangladesh. The plant will be located at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN), Mirsharai, Chattogram. In the future, this plant can be expanded to produce four million tons annually.

Orders for eight new Danieli Zerobucket electric arc furnaces have been placed by five Chinese steelmakers over the last six months.

Qiananshi Jiujiang, Hebei Puyang, Tangshan Zhongshou, Changshu Longteng and Zhejiang Yuxin relied on Danieli electric steelmaking Zerobucket technology for their investments in new melting units.
