SMS group supplies process technology for the world's first large-scale green steel production plant

Primetals Technologies recently received a new order from voestalpine for implementing the knowledge-based quality control system Through-Process Quality Control (TPQC) at the steel plant in Donawitz, Austria. Implementation is scheduled for the 2nd quarter of 2023.

thyssenkrupp Electrical Steel GmbH has successfully launched the production management system PSImetals 5 from PSI Metals. The software modules Production and Quality control the cold rolling mill, heat treatment, surface treatment and cutting. The solution allows for a seamless integration of the production processes with the business layer in ERP and plant automation.

Most of the CO2 emissions in steelmaking comes from the blast furnace process, which today is still the main production route. Primetals Technologies is developing a new green steel technology to replace blast furnace plants and has signed a collaboration contract with RHI Magnesita, the global leader in refractory innovations.

Nucor Corporation's Board of Directors approved the construction of a galvanizing line at Nucor Steel Berkeley in South Carolina to support the company's strategy to expand its capabilities and grow participation in the automotive and consumer durables markets. The $425 million investment will create more than 50 new full-time jobs and start-up is expected in mid-2025. Additionally, Nucor's Board of Directors approved a galvanizing line to be constructed in the western United States with details to be announced at a future date.

SMS digital, a Center of Excellence of the SMS group, has signed an agreement to implement a package of advanced digital services for the Siderúrgica Huachipato steel mill at the Talcahuano site.

SSAB has entered into an agreement with the Norwegian steel distributor Norsk Stål AS, as the first external distributor to deliver fossil-free steel on the Norwegian Market, starting 2026.

“I am happy to welcome Norsk Stål as a fossil-free steel partner. Together, we are contributing to reduced carbon dioxide emissions by introducing fossil-free steel to the Norwegian market,” says Matts Nilsson, Head of Sales Sweden & Norway at SSAB. “Together, we are building fossil-free value chains all the way to the end customer.”
