Outokumpu has selected SMS group to supply an atomization plant for the production of high-quality stainless steel powder used in additive manufacturing. This is the first ever facility SMS group is going to supply under a Subscription contract. While this agreement is new territory for both companies, it will pave the way for a long-term cooperation between the two partners.

The aim of the project is to increase the furnace throughput up to 160 t/h of hot-rolled coil, to upgrade the combustion system and the after-pot cooling tower equipment, complying with the latest safety requirements.

OMK (United Metallurgical Company) has contracted Danieli Centro Met to supply a new EAF meltshop and seven-strand bloom caster, to be installed at Vyksa (Russian Federation) and produce up to 1.8 Mtpy of steel, of which 800,000 tons will be cast in blooms for pipes, railroad wheels and springs.

SIAM YAMATO STEEL CO., LTD. has awarded SMS group the final acceptance certificate for the upgrade with ConSo R6 injector technology of the No. 1 electric arc furnace at its Rayong, Thailand, site. Based on the good experience gained from the modernization of electric arc furnace No. 2 with ConSo R6 injector technology, supplied by SMS group in 2010 along with a complete minimill, SIAM YAMATO decided to have furnace No. 1 revamped in the same way by SMS group.

Four Danieli, 150-t zero-bucket UHP EAFs with ECS system for continuous scrap preheating and charging will be installed in a new steel complex in Yunfu City, Guangdong province, China.
They will feature a “Diving Pool” asymmetric bottom shell, Q-REG+ electrode regulation and a melt chemistry package based on fixed oxygen-and carbon-injectors plus “Palmur” supersonic sidewall lances, together with advanced automation.

Today, SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall are taking a decisive step toward fossil-free steelmaking with the start-up of HYBRIT’s globally unique pilot plant for the production of fossil-free sponge iron. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven started up the plant together with Isabella Lövin, Minister for Environment and Climate and Deputy Prime Minister, Martin Lindqvist, President and CEO of SSAB, Jan Moström, President and CEO of LKAB and Magnus Hall, President and CEO of Vattenfall. SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall aim to create a complete value chain for fossil-free steel.

SMS group has successfully – and ahead of schedule – commissioned the No. 2 shearing line of Jiangsu Shagang Group in Zhangjiagang, China, after the installation of an X-Pact® automation system.

In May, PJSC “Ilyich Iron and Steel Works of Mariupol” (Ilyich Steel) issued the FAC for the revamp of its 1,700 mm hot strip mill (HSM 1700). The revamp of HSM 1700 further increases MMKI’s competitiveness through the extension of product mix and range, improvement of quality, increase of productivity and reduction of production costs. Production capacity will grow from 1.36 to 2.5 million tons per year. A state-of-the-art automation system makes the plant ready for Industry 4.0.
