• HyREX – a new technology for hydrogen-based hot metal production
• Primetals Technologies and POSCO have agreed to jointly develop a new green steel demonstration plant

On July 26th, Primetals Technologies and South Korean leading steel producer POSCO signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop a demonstration plant for hydrogen-based hot metal production in South Korea. Startup of the plant is scheduled for early 2027.

SMS group company Paul Wurth has been selected to supply the world's first commercial 100 percent hydrogen Direct Reduction plant with its consortium partner Midrex to the Swedish company H2 Green Steel. The new plant, located in Boden in northern Sweden, will be the first worldwide to produce green steel at scale by replacing coal with green hydrogen.

Danieli Service will carry out the upgrade project supplying new downcoiler and installation services.

Jindal United Stainless Limited – JUSL selected Danieli Service to supply a new downcoiler #2 for upgrading its hot-strip mill down coiler area at JUSL, Jajpur plant, India, which is producing stainless-steel grades 200, 300, 400 series.

New research within the HYBRIT project, driven by SSAB, LKAB and Vattenfall, shows superior results on the properties and quality of the hydrogen direct reduced sponge iron (H-DRI) made using HYBRIT technology. Test results prove that the direct reduction of iron ore using hydrogen offers a superior product that is easy to handle, transport and store. It also virtually eliminates CO2 emissions in the reduction process.

Bashundhara Multisteel Industries Limited, the Steel Division of Bashundhara Group, one of the largest business conglomerates in Bangladesh, signed a contract with SMS group to install an integrated facility to produce more than two million tons of hot rolled coils annually with the goal of filling the gap in demand for flat products in Bangladesh. The plant will be located at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Shilpa Nagar (BSMSN), Mirsharai, Chattogram. In the future, this plant can be expanded to produce four million tons annually.

In pursuing a shared ambition to reduce carbon emissions from iron and steel production, JSW Steel, the flagship company of the $22 billion JSW Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SMS group to explore multiple cutting-edge solutions and R&D projects to reduce carbon emissions in its iron and steel making operations in India.

Orders for eight new Danieli Zerobucket electric arc furnaces have been placed by five Chinese steelmakers over the last six months.

Qiananshi Jiujiang, Hebei Puyang, Tangshan Zhongshou, Changshu Longteng and Zhejiang Yuxin relied on Danieli electric steelmaking Zerobucket technology for their investments in new melting units.

• Salzgitter AG orders Electric Arc Furnace Ultimate designed to produce 1.9 million tons of steel per year
• An important step toward long-term aim of green steel production
• Start of production planned for end of 2025

On August 23rd, German steel producer Salzgitter signed a contract with Primetals Technologies for an EAF Ultimate. With a tapping weight of 220 tons, the furnace will have an annual capacity of 1.9 million tons of steel. It will be implemented at the steel plant in Salzgitter, Germany. Startup is scheduled for end of 2025.
